Dedicated to the memory of Patrick Kelly

Our wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend, Patrick Kelly, died peacefully on the 23rd October 2023 after living with cancer for four years. He was warm and open-hearted, gentle, and witty. He was a journalist, an author, an activist, and the lynchpin of his family. He lit up the lives of the people who knew him, and any who met him were left touched by his warmth.

Patrick published his novel last year, and the chance to promote it was taken away from him by this cruel illness. This is where you can buy the novel: https://www.waterstones.com/book/a-hard-place/patrick-kelly/9781800422452

We are raising money for St. Leonard's Hospice who cared for him so beautifully in his final months. If you feel able to donate, our family would love to support the Hospice in lieu of flowers.

He was our wordsmith, of course, so nothing we write will ever feel like enough - but this page will serve as a place to gather our memories of this kind and brave adventurer. He is much loved and always remembered.

Thoughts

Everything that has been said about Patrick, before and after he died, is true. He must have been born a good person and couldn't help working at becoming an even better person (which you might not have thought possible) as he got older. But I think, for some of his old friends, all that was a very beautiful bonus but that wasn't why we loved him. We didn't even love him for being Patrick or for being such a brilliant friend. We just loved HIM and we always will. XXXXX

I first met Patrick 45 years ago, in April 1978 when l got the job as staff photographer and we worked together for four years on the weekly Hillingdon Mirror Newspaper. There are four centre page spreads on the Picture Gallery of our work. They illustrate Patrick had the most brilliant witty and comical sense of humour in ‘ The name’s Alf Lunnon - he’s the man with the golden pinta ’ and ‘ Splashing out at two boro’ fetes ’ is written as a letter to his mother Dear Mum… he also showed great empathy in the Harmondsworth detention centre story. Finally ‘ One Big Happy Family ’ is a true love story based in Hayes. I have always had the deepest admiration and respect for Patrick and l am sending my condolences to Julia his daughters and family.

Like Charlie, I started work on the Hillingdon Mirror as a cub reporter. I was 19 and a bit wet behind the ears but Patrick was immediately friendly and affable and made me feel very welcome. He was always the first to offer help and advice. He was a brilliant FOC and we stood on many a picket line together. Like Charlie I went on to become an FOC of one of the biggest chapels in EMAP. I wonder how many of us were inspired to become activists by Patrick? Many of us I suspect. What I most respected about him was his integrity which was always non-negotiable. I remember his many negotiation with various editors who would try to buy his loyalty by taking him into their confidences. Patrick always reminded them that anything and everything they said would be reported back to the chapel. He wasn't joking. Apart from being a great FOC and friend he was also a great journalist, passionate about causes that others often ignored. I was always envious of the fact that he covered the Hayes patch because that's where all the crime was! He wrote superbly well and had some great contacts in Hayes. I always read his stories with relish so I could learn from a journalist who represented everything I wanted to be. He was also great fun to be with and enjoying a pint with him at a local hostelry was always a treat. His sense of humour was second to none and he was always loyal, kept in touch and treasured friendships. He was immensely proud of his daughters and wife Julia and sincere condolences to them. He's gone too soon but it was a life well lived.
